Meet the Cypress Team Behind Mainspring Garage Door Co.

Our Cypress crew isn’t a rotating cast of subcontractors. These are the same faces who show up at your door in Los Alamitos, at the condo complex near Cypress College, or out by the racetrack on a Sunday emergency call. Carl Dutton, Owner

Carl started Mainspring Garage Door Co. in 1984, naming it for the torsion spring that carries every pound of a garage door’s weight, the part most homeowners never think about until it snaps at 6 a.m. He’s still the one who answers the phone at odd hours more often than he’d prefer, and he still drives out to jobs in Cypress and the surrounding cities when a repair gets complicated or a customer needs to talk to the person whose name is on the truck. Carl holds a California contractor’s license and factory certifications from Clopay, Amarr, and Wayne Dalton. On Tuesday mornings, he can usually be found at the shop with coffee that went cold an hour ago, reviewing the previous day’s callbacks to make sure there weren’t any. His dry observation: “Forty-two years in, and I still learn something new every time a customer describes the noise their door is making.”

Mike R., Lead Technician

Mike has been with Mainspring for fourteen years and handles the bulk of our repair calls in Cypress, from the older ranch homes near Oak Knoll Park to the newer construction up by Katella Avenue. He’s factory-trained on LiftMaster and Chamberlain opener systems, and he’s the technician other crews call when a spring configuration doesn’t match the standard chart. Mike carries a master certification in torsion spring balancing from the International Door Association, which matters more than it sounds when you’re dealing with a seven-foot solid wood door in a humid Cypress winter that throws off the calibration. His truck is organized with the kind of precision that suggests a military background, which he has, though he’ll only mention it if you ask about the Coast Guard sticker on his toolbox. Diana joined us eight years ago after running her own handyman business in Long Beach, where she got tired of turning down garage door jobs because she didn’t have the right equipment or backup. Diana is certified in wind-load installation for coastal-adjacent zones, which means she understands how the Santa Ana gusts that whip through the I-605 corridor can stress a door’s track system over time. He’s not a technician, but he’s walked enough jobs with Carl and Mike to know the difference between a broken torsion spring and a snapped cable, and he’ll tell you straight if a same-day fix is realistic or if we need to order a custom panel. He lives in Cypress proper, near the Los Alamitos Race Course, and his commute is short enough that he’s often the one handling the early emergency calls.
