Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay has used several drum designs across their product lines, and matching the right one matters. The stamped-steel standard-lift drums found on most Classic, Gallery, and Coachman series doors in Cypress carry a 4-inch diameter with an 18-inch cable wrap capacity. Taller doors, common in the newer west-side subdivisions with 10-foot garage ceilings, need high-lift drums with a larger hub and longer cable travel. The stamped part number is usually visible on the drum face, but if rust has eaten it away, we measure drum height, bore diameter, and cable groove pitch on-site.

Clopay’s OEM cables are 7×19 galvanized aircraft-grade wire with a 1/8-inch diameter for standard residential doors. We also carry quality aftermarket equivalents from Dura-Lift and Prime-Line that meet the same tensile spec at a lower parts cost. For doors under warranty, we will install OEM. For most others, the aftermarket cable holds up just as well in Cypress’s dry, warm climate, where the real enemy is UV fatigue on the cable sheath and oxidation at the bottom loop, not moisture corrosion.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

• The door sits crooked when closed. One cable has stretched or slipped off its drum, so that side of the door hangs lower. In Cypress, we see this most often on doors facing afternoon sun, where thermal expansion loosens cable tension faster on the south-facing side.
• A loud bang, then the door won’t lift. The cable has snapped under load, usually at the bottom bracket where it flexes most. Clopay cables typically last 8-12 years here, but we have replaced 6-year-old cables on heavily used doors near Veterans Park where the owner runs a home business with constant in-and-out traffic.
• Cable is frayed or bird-caged near the drum. The drum groove has worn sharp, or the cable was improperly seated and is rubbing against the drum hub. This is a replace-both situation: the damaged cable and the worn drum together.
• The drum spins but the door does not move. The set screws have backed out, or the keyway is wallowed out from years of torque. This happens on Clopay’s older solid-steel drums more than the newer cast designs.
• The cable slips off the drum during operation. Usually means the drum is out of level, the cable is the wrong length for the door height, or the torsion spring torque is mismatched side-to-side. A cable that keeps derailing is almost never just a cable problem.
